Top 9 Packing Tips: What to Pack for San Diego

What to Pack for a Trip to San Diego

Wondering what to pack for San Diego trip? We’re here to help! The plethora of sunny days and warm temps throughout the year make San Diego the perfect destination for any season. But plan accordingly! Here are some items you’ll want to pack for your trip to San Diego.

The Five Ss: Shades, SPF, Sneakers, Swimsuit and Sweatshirt

This may seem obvious, but do not forget at least one pair of shades when you travel to San Diego! Even better idea is to make sure your sunglasses end up in your carry-on luggage just in case your checked baggage gets lost (and we hope that won’t happen). Along with this, remember to pack a hat and adequate SPF to keep your skin covered and safe in the San Diego sunshine.

Sneakers are another essential! If you decide to stroll the Pacific Beach / Mission Beach Boardwalk, take a hike up to Presidio Park or just explore America’s Finest City on foot. Flip-flops are nice to have for leisurely days, but your feet will thank you for packing a proper pair of athletic footwear.

There are a surprising number of eighty degree plus days in San Diego, even in the wintertime. Bring a swimsuit (and cover-up) just in case! Even if you don’t hop in the water, you may want to wear it under a wetsuit if you opt for stand-up paddle boarding on Mission Bay. Plan on laying out on one of San Diego’s beaches? A swimsuit is a MUST. Don’t end up needing it? No worries–it hardly takes up any room in your bag.

Always bring a sweatshirt or light jacket in your carry-on bag. Summer nights can be cool, likewise with days during fall, spring and winter. Check the weather before you travel, and add or subtract layers accordingly. The weather app is your friend!

Waterproof Smartphone Case

The last thing you want to happen is accident water damage to your phone during a trip. Ensure that doesn’t happen and bring a waterproof smartphone case if you don’t already have one. It  might start out as “just a walk on the beach,” but you never know, and recommend being safe rather than sorry. Nobody wants to be phone-less on vacation! Check out LifeProof for some solid waterproof cases for all devices.

Beach or Travel Blanket

This is a must if you plan on spending time in the sand or at any of San Diego’s outdoor spaces–you never know when the urge for a picnic will strike! There are many travel sized, waterproof blankets available online so they won’t take up too much room in your suitcase. Of course there are plenty of places to pick-up a beach towel or mat, but sometimes having your own saves time and effort so you can maximize the fun in the sun.

Casual Clothing Vibes

San Diego tends to be pretty casual when it comes to clothing. Pack clothes and shoes that can dress up or dress down for an easy transition from day-to-night. Men should be sure to have a pair of pants and closed-toe shoes just in case. If you’re visiting San Diego for business, pack those corporate clothes but bring some casual pieces to add to the mix. If you’re staying with us in our hotel close to Downtown San Diego and plan to hit the nightlife, definitely dress to the nines! Beach bars tend to have more of the “flip-flop” vibe.

An Appetite

This one should go without saying, because San Diego is home to countless award-winning restaurants, chefs, breweries and eateries. Little Italy San Diego alone offers something for every foodie’s palette. Want to spot a celebrity chef? Little Italy is home to Juniper & Ivy and The Crack Shack, both by Top Chef winner Richard Blais.

And do not worry–if you forget something, our boutique hotel in Little Italy is steps away from San Diego shopping. Everything you need is right in our neighborhood, which is close to downtown San Diego, Old Town, Fashion Valley shopping mall and so much more.
