Looking to escape home, but don’t want to break all the rules? A short road trip may be in your future. Although California has been under “Stay at Home” orders since March 19, 2020, our state has begun the reopening process; and here at La Pensione Hotel, we can’t wait to welcome you back.

Whether you missed your spring trip to Italy, or just need a change of scenery, Little Italy’s historic neighborhood is ready to host you. Unified as a community, we are conducting business with safety in mind. Start your day off right with a piping hot cup of coffee from Caffe Italia. This delicious and absolutely necessary morning drink includes a danish or croissant, and is always complimentary for La Pensione guests. Sip and savor your take-away breakfast treat in the comfort of your boutique room.

Deciding where to order lunch or dinner may be the hardest part of your day. For traditional Italian fare, we recommend trying Civico 1845. Their take-out menu is sure to please the pickiest of eaters, and even offers several vegan options. Or how about healthy and exotic Japanese? Harumama Noodles and Buns has reimagined traditional Japanese recipes with a SoCal flair and is a must try when visiting. American cuisine is also readily available in our neighborhood. Extraordinary Dessert offers a variety of soups, salads, cheese boards and more for take out. Their decadent dessert offerings change daily, and taste even better when you’re in your pajamas.

If you’re more of a connoisseur of beer and wine, both Ballast Point Brewery and Bolt Brewery offer beer for pick-up while Vino Carta offers hundreds of wines from around the world, available to-go. For a complete list of restaurants currently serving, visit the Little Italy Association website.

We’re happy to share that Piazza Della Famiglia is also open again, with safety measures in place and Al Fresco dining options available by reservation. This open air area is located directly across from our boutique hotel in Little Italy. Read the guidelines for the Piazza and other Little Italy neighborhood parks and open spaces here. Little Italy Mercato is also operating a modified Saturday Farmer’s Market!

Never has it been more important to renew your mind-body connection. Our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our bodies. According to the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s journal, the color blue has been found by an overwhelming amount of people to be associated with feelings of calm and peace, it is also associated with a boost of creativity. Doctors agree that being near the water can be good for your health. Staring at the ocean actually changes our brain waves’ frequency and puts us into a mild meditative state. Good news, the San Diego county beaches are open as long as visitors practice social distancing and wear a facial covering when around other people. You can walk, run, bike, swim, surf, and kayak—all of which are a fantastic way to get an extra dose of Vitamin D–just in time for summer.  Taking in the fresh ocean air and warm summer sun is sure to revitalize and invigorate. We highly recommend a daily stroll by the sea to calm, restore, and foster mindfulness.

If green space is your preferred environment, community and neighborhood parks are open for walking, jogging, and hiking. Balboa Park is also starting to reopen areas. Most county parks and preserves also remain open to foot, bike and horse traffic. Going for a long walk or family hike is another great way to rejuvenate mind and body. We recommend a day trip to Miramar Lake or Lake Murray

Feeling more adventurous? A short road trip out to the desert just east of San Diego can be just as soothing to the soul. Visit the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation website for a complete list of open parks.
